Monday, September 28, 2009 - Day Trip to Alyson's Orchards, Walpole, NH
Meet at Messiah Lutheran Church parking lot at 9:00 am for Instructions; leaving promptly at 9:15 am. (Messiah Lutheran Church, 303 Route 101, next door to the Amherst Nursery) 
This is the time for our annual trip to Alyson's Orchards in beautiful Walpole, NH. First stop is a visit to the orchards themselves where we can purchase
wonderful apples and other fall fruits. Next, we will be having lunch, at the home of the orchard owner, Susan Jasse. Lunch includes a wine selection and a cooking lesson. This is a very popular event and is always sold out. After lunch we will cross the border into Vermont and visit the historic Vermont Country Store (#2) of catalog fame in lovely Bellows Falls, Vermont. With time permitting we may be able to visit Basket World and then back into Walpole tofinish up the day at Burdick's Chocolates. Please make checks payable to Susan Jasse for $35.00 when you signup. There will also be a charge of approximately $10.00 for your driver unless you decide to drive. (If you decide to drive please note that including the number of passengers you can accommodate). We have a limit of 15 ladies for lunch but no limit to the number of participants for the trip.

LUNCHING OUT - Bentley Commons, Bedford, NH

This is a special luncheon offered to the members of the BWC. Bentley Commons is offering us a free lunch for visiting their facility. Bentley Commons is an assisted living facility and offers several tiers of care. We will not be "hard sold" but instead will be able to look around and see what Bentley Commons has to offer its residents which could be our relatives in the future. If you are interested, please join us. It should prove to be informative. We can have up to 80 attendees!

PROGRAM - Benjamin Kilham - “Among the Bears: Raising Orphan Bear Cubs in the Wild”

This researcher, naturalist and author will speak on his vast experience with black bears. The New York Times Book Review wrote, “Compelling…a vivid picture of ursine social life and intelligence.” National Geographic called him “Mother Bear Man.” Benjamin Kilman, is a native of New Hampshire.

DAY TRIP - Quechee Gorge, Vermont and Simon Pearce

Meet at the Macy's mailboxes at 9:00 am, leaving promptly at 9:15 am. We will carpool to Quechee, Vt. and arrive at the Simon Pearce Gallery in time for lunch, hopefully by 11:30 am. We cannot arrange reservations in advance so we need to beat the tour buses or sit at tables of four. We can browse the gallery either before or after  lunch, depending on time, and stop at the country store and antique shops on the trip back. We should be able to determine if there are other places we could visit on the drive back. Lunch will be self-pay and remember to pay your driver unless you intend to drive. When signing up for this drive, please note whether you will be able to drive and the number of passengers your vehicle can accommodate.

HARVEST TIME PROGRESSIVE DINNER

6:00-7:30 pm - Hors d'oeurves 7:30 - 9:30 pm – Dinner 9:30 - 11:00 pm - Dessert

Join together for an evening of good friends and good food. Hors d'oeurves will be enjoyed in one home, then drive to another for salad and dinner and then off again for dessert and coffee. You will be providing food, fee and fun.

TRIP - Skyventure, Nashua,N.H.

Experience sky diving indoors at Skyventure in a state of the art vertical wind tunnel.

Individual Flight 2 Minutes- Introduction to Body Flight Two one-minute sessions in the flight chamber. (Two minutes in the flight chamber is equal to 3 skydives from 13,000 FEET!) You will be in the tunnel with your group for up to 30 minutes and will be taking turns flying. All equipment and training are included. Reservation by check for $48.00 payable to Hannah Perutz by Monday, November 9.

PROGRAM - Warden Joanne Fortier “Life in Goffstown State Prison for Women”

Joanne Fortier, the Warden of the Goffstown State Prison for Women, will be accompanied by a woman who is presently in the minimum security unit of the prison. They will speak about life in prison and the circumstances that the women experience before and out of prison. Joanne graduated from UNH in Durham and began her career as Corrections Officer, NH State Prison for Men 1985-1986, Probation /Parole Officer 1986- 1995, Chief Probations/Parole Officer 1995-1999, Assistant Director of Field Services & Community Corrections 1999-2007, and presently Warden for the past two years. Joanne is married and has two sons, named Hunter and Riley.

DAY TRIP - Christmas Shopping, Kittery, Maine

Meet at the Macy's mailboxes at 9:00 am, leaving promptly at 9:15 am. We will carpool to Kittery, Maine and shop until we drop! We can lunch at one of several sea food restaurants while in Kittery: Bob's Clam Hut (on the Phantom Gourmet's list of best clam restaurants!), Roberts's of Maine or the Weathervane. If you enjoy outlet shopping, this is the place to be. There are many upscale shops open. Should the group prefer, we can abort Kittery and go into Portsmouth and try Strawberry Bank or visit Stonewall Kitchens. Many choices. Lunch will be self-pay. Remember to pay your driver, unless you are the driver. Please note number of passengers you will be able to accommodate. Last day to sign-up is Monday, November 30.

HOLLY LUNCHEON - 11:30-2:30 pm

Crowne Plaza, Nashua (exit 8 west off the Everett Turnpike)

This is the first year we will be having our annual holiday event at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nashua. The luncheon will be held in the Hunt Club which is beautifully decorated for the season complete with trees and

greens, festoons and ribbons. Beautiful ambience. The food is wonderful and the menu is being designed especially for the BWC. Please join us for a lovely holiday event. Carpooling is available and encouraged. There is plenty of free parking in the hotel garage. Remember to sign up to drive. Reservation deadline will be announced closer to the date along with menu selection.  Following the Holly Luncheon, members are invited to gather at 4 p.m. on the

lawn of the Bedford Presbyterian Church for the Town Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Peg Donahue will speak on how to arrange your environment to mirror yourself and live in harmony with nature.Peg Donahue lives in Windham, NH. She is a Feng Shui practitioner, Building Biology Environmental consultant, speaker, teacher, life coach and author. She is the founder of Feng Shui Connections, a co-founder of the Center for Feng Shui and Intuitive Arts, and a co-founder of Living Energy LLC. An avid learner, her background includes an MBA from Boston University, a BA from Georgetown University, certifications from the International Institute

as a Building Biology Environmental Consultant, as a facilitator of the Emotional Freedom and Healing technique, as a Prosperity Guide and Habit of Attraction Coach, and has three professional Feng Shui certifications. She is a

co-author of Dorm Room Feng Shui.

PROGRAM – Herb Lucas - “An Artist’s Journey”

Herb will share, with his audience, how he started as an artist, how he arrived at the present in the art field, and where he is going with his painting on the national scene. A New England native who resides in Bedford, New Hampshire, Herb travels the coastline and the hills and valleys of northern New England that he loves in search of scenery that inspires him to masterfully put oil on canvas. seacoast nuances, barns in autumn and winter, and relics in fields are among some of Herb’s popular paintings featuring subtle, yet extraordinary, detail. Herb has generously donated a couple of his mini prints depicting Bedford scenes to be auctioned off to benefit our scholarships and charities.

This organization has many needs, but we are focusing on one area for donations. Paper Goods: Paper plates, foam dinner plates, bowls, and dessert plates, plastic silverware, tablecloths, cups - hot and cold, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper. Snow shovels at this time of year are also needed.

PROGRAM MEETING - Light luncheon Served

PROGRAM – Antoinette Drouart – “Ikebana Flower Arranging”

Antoinette Drouart will be speaking and illustrating the art of Ikebana flower arranging. She will complete two arrangements and has generously agreed to raffle them at the end of her presentation. 

Antoinette lived and trained in Japan for six years and has received several certificates from the Ikebana Sogetsu School headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The Ikebana style of flower arranging dates back to the eighth century. The term Ikebana means “living flowers” and is simply a Japanese way of arranging flowers for aesthetic enjoyment. It is attuned to the season and requires specific angles and lengths of flowers. Despite immersion in Ikebana for years, Antoinette continues learning the technique by going to classes. It is “an ongoing journey”!

Camp Allen is a private, non-profit, residential and day camp in Bedford for individuals with physical and/or developmental disabilities. This month, we are collecting donations for Camp Allen’s nursing station cupboards. Milk of Magnesia, ice packs, calamine lotion, Pepto Bismol, Maalox, throat lozenges, bug spray, Tylenol, ibuprophen, Benadryl, etc.

American Watercolor Masterworks at the Currier

Come with Hannah and see Homer to Hopper. The exhibition of seventy works traces the history of watercolor over the last 175 years. It will include works by Richards, Prendergast, Kent,Hassam, and Wyeth. Among others. We will lunch in the museum's Winter Garden afterwards.

Our final event of this year will be lunch at Pickety Place, the home of Little Red Riding Hood. We need to phone in our menu choices several days in advance, so please phone Nita Beale 472-8351 by the reservation deadline if you wish to attend. She will give you menu choices at that time. Meet at the Messiah Lutheran Church parking lot and carpool from there. Time will be determined as Pickety Place has seating times and those times are likely to change with the seasons.

Our Annual Luncheon will be hold at the Manchester Country Club in Bedford, NH. Come enjoy spring....have a great meal. It’s time to get a basket ready for our annual Basket Raffle. We had a fantastic selection of baskets last year which were donated by individuals and groups. Thank you and keep up the good work! Ticket sales, details of the menu selections, and cost will be announced in March.

Last meeting to pay dues. After June 1, $5 late fee.
